What is Chemistry?

Science is a systematic enterprise that builds and organizes knowledge in the form of testable explanation and predictions about the world. The word 'science' is originated from a latin term 'Scientia' which means 'KNOWLEDGE'. Physically, science is an attempt to understand, explain and predict the world we live in. Science may be defined as describing.creating and understanding facts of human experience.

Science is both a body of knowledge and a process.

Science is exciting.

Science is useful.

Science is ongoing.

Science is a global human endeavour.

Science helps us construct knowledge about the natural world- knowledge that can then be harnessed to improve our lives and solve problems. Science is an immensely powerful method of investigating the world.

Science is dynamic building upon the ideas and discoveries which one generation passes on to the next, as well as making huge leaps forward when completely new discoveries are made.

Science, like comedy, often demands that we look at familiar things in unfamiliar ways. Science and its research is the search for new reproducible and useful knowledge. The sciences are concerned with the study of inanimate natural objects, including physics, chemistry, astronomy, and related subjects. Science disciplines are broadly classified into two categories; one is Pure science and the other is Applied Science.

Pure science is also known as Basic Science. It is concerned with basic facts and principles in science. Eg: Natural science, Chemical science, Physical science etc.

Applied science uses the facts and principles of basic science for practically doing and making things. Eg: Biotechnology, Genetic Engineering, Polymer chemistry, Electro-physics etc.

Applied science differs from fundamental science, which seeks to describe the most basic objects and forces, having less emphasis on practical applications. Applied science can be like biological science and physical science. Historically, mathematics was most important in the natural sciences and engineering.
