Description

Why does the moon Appear to be moving with us?

The distance of the moon from the earth is 3,84,400 km. Its diameter is around 3476 km. Its surface can be clearly seen with the help of a telescope. When we walk or move in a vehicle, the moon seems to be moving with us. On the other hand trees, plants, buildings and other objects seem to move backward.

The reason is simply the moon's long distance from the earth. In fact, it is only a psychological process. When we move in a vehicle, the angle subtended at our eyes by the object on the earth goes on changing rapidly, and as such, the objects appear to be going backwards. The angle appears to be changing rapidly because the objects are not far away from us. However, the moon is so far away, that with our movements, the change in the angle subtended by the moon is extremely small. Even if we travel several miles on the earth, the change in the angle will not be appreciable. Thus, due to the small change in angle, the moon appears to be moving with us.
